Temps are Cooling Down, but We’re Heating Up

What’s up Zags?!

Like the new look? We slimmed down a little, just thought we’d take the whole “New Year, New You” resolution make and be very literal with it….which means starting our resolution with 75% of the year gone. BUT HEY! We’re working on navigation and organization, so hopefully this can help streamline things a bit! Important posts will appear at the top of the blog and you can scroll through important pictures, so clicking on the picture will take you to the post, while below the pictures all the articles will appear in reverse chronological order, just like before.

Welcome in to the fifth week of the school year, which means…. We’re already a month in. WHAT?! Tomorrow is October, which means it’s socially acceptable to watch all those Halloween movies we already watch year round, and ordering your favorite pumpkin-spice salted-caramel autumn infused addiction from Starbucks feels oh so right.

All that means is we’ve got plenty of new and exciting things that will be going on this week, and some more that we’re rolling out! So, without any more babbling, here’s what we’ve got on deck….

  1. Busy week in the Zags Sports World!

Thursday, October 2: Volleyball takes on Pepperdine at HOME! This is the first time our volleyball girls have had a home match in almost a month, so get out there and support them at 6 pm!

Friday, October 3: Women’s Soccer takes on St. Mary’s at home (for the first time in three weeks!) at 3:30 pm, while Men’s Soccer is at Pacific

Saturday, October 4: Volleyball returns against Loyola Marymount at noon

Sunday, October 5: A soccer doubleheader! First the girls battle Pacific at 11 am, then the guys battle St. Mary’s right afterward at 1:30 pm.

  1. Return of sporting events means two things:

First, ZAG REWARDS IS BACK! Yes, Athletics wants to give you free things for going out and supporting our fellow Zags as they compete. However, a couple things are different than last year. Remember how you would first swipe into the event, then have to go to the athletics table to swipe your card for a point? NO MORE! All you have to do is swipe into the event and bam, you’ve got your point. So, every time you go to an event, your one step closer to free gear. For updates and special promos like double point opportunities (HINT: Thursday night is a double point game), follow @ZagRewards on Twitter or check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ZagRewards

Second, remember the Kennel Cards and how you got some SWEET deals a couple weeks ago with them? Why not do it again?! This weekend, all four businesses on the card have promos when you show your Kennel Card! So, if you’re already tired of the BARC (we get it), this is a great chance to go out and explore Spokane dining options without making your wallet cry!

  • On Thursday, Rosa’s Pizza is having a BOGO – buy one, get one free on any menu item
  • On Saturday, Pita Pit has the same deal – buy one pita, get one free
  • On Sunday at Geno’s you can get a free Happy Hour-style appetizer with any sandwich or entrée
  • As always, remember that showing your card at Chairs will get you 15% off!

Remember that you have to show your card at the business, and each deal is limited to one per customer!

  1. Connect with us on Snapchat!

Hold up. Snapchat?! YES. We made a Snapchat account so you guys can get a behind the scenes look at what goes into a basketball game, what we’re up to, and for promotional ideas. We figured since over 77% of college students use Snapchat every day (to the tune of 200,000,000 snaps a day), why not connect through it? This is going to be a great way to run promotions and give away some sweet stuff in the future, but for now… BE OUR FRIEND! Username: GonzagaKennel. We’ll be posting a lot of MyStories in the coming weeks leading up to Kraziness in the Kennel, so watch for them on your feed! Send us snaps of yourself in the Kennel too, maybe you’ll end up as our favorites of the day and win some sweet gear!

Whew, that was a lot of info. So, in summary, the TL;DR

  • Volleyball Thursday night, Women’s Soccer Friday, Volleyball Saturday, Soccer doubleheader Sunday
  • Zag Rewards is back and easier than ever
  • Kennel Cards = free things this weekend!
  • Snapchat us! GonzagaKennel

That’s all for now! See you all back in the Kennel for KRAZINESS in just a few weeks!

Something GREAT is Coming to Campus…

First off, THANK YOU to everyone that came out to see us at Club Fair! It’s always great to see so many of you guys excited to get back in the Kennel and root for the Zags! If you missed us and still need to pick up your membership pack, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future to get that taken care of, so don’t worry.

Quick weekly rundown:

Tuesday, 9/16: Women’s Golf is on Day 2 of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational

Friday, 9/19: Women’s Soccer is at North Texas and Volleyball is at Seattle

Saturday, 9/20: Volleyball at Montana, Men’s Soccer takes on UNLV at home at 1:00pm, and XC is at Plantes Ferry at 9:00am (this is a HOME race for them, so get out there and watch a great run!)

Now, for the meat of this post…

As many of you may have heard, Gonzaga University has the incredible honor to host the 2014 Opus Prize, which is a HUGE deal! If you don’t know, the Opus Foundation gives the Prize away to faith-based humanitarian efforts across the world. First prize: a cool million bucks (casual). Two other finalists receive $100K for their awesome work.

Basically, this is a great opportunity to get an up-close look at some people who are doing some great things out there in the world, and they are all coming here (yes, little ol’ GU in Spokane, Washington) in recognition of all of the hard work and effort they put in to the communities they serve.

But Blog, you may find yourself asking, Why does the Kennel Club care? This isn’t a sporting event – we can’t go and cheer and be rowdy at a prestigious award ceremony!

But that’s the thing – as a representation of Gonzaga University and all the great things that happen here, we feel it’s important to have a great representation of our student body present and active in all things Opus on and off campus (and there are a lot of opportunities to be involved). For example, did you know that some of your fellow Zags have already met the Finalists, and actually spent their Spring Breaks and Summers touring around the communities the Finalists are involved in, seeing first hand all the great things that they are doing? Did you know that our President, Dr. Thayne McCulloh, was one of the jurors responsible for selecting the Finalists for the award – and worked with people like Greg Bui (Nike VP), Cherif Bassiouni (United Nations Human Rights Expert), and Fawn Sharp (President of the Quinault Indian Nation)?

Gonzaga has been extremely connected with the Opus Foundation in getting ready to award this ONE MILLION DOLLAR PRIZE to someone who represents the exact values that we learn here as students. Our mission aligns with the mission of Opus, challenging others to think globally and live lives of service. There are weekly Tuesday night lectures on campus in Wolff (7:00 pm) leading up to the final ceremony that address all of these topics and more – this is a great opportunity to open your mind to some great things happening around the world, and what Gonzaga has been working on for a long time.

Tickets to the final ceremony on October 16th are FREE (that’s $0) in Crosby – all you have to do is pick one up with your student ID card (Get them at the same as your friends so you can all sit together)! Transportation to the Fox Theater is provided, so get together with your friends and go check out some great people who are about to have their lives changed!

For more information about Opus, the Finalists and all events going on leading up to the final ceremony, visit http://www.gonzaga.edu/beinspired/opus-prize/default.asp, or email Ally Crha (she’s very passionate about this!) acrha@zagmail.gonzaga.edu

HELLLLLO THERE, ZAGS! Hope the first week of classes is going well, and that you’re finding it easy to get back in the swing of things. With that being said, let’s get the important piece of information out of the way….

That’s right! For those of you who are freshmen, or maybe some sophomores, you might not remember the Blog. But for those of us that do, we go way back – nothing like being able to get on the Blog and check up on all your sports at once, or read some dirt on the next basketball opponent as you’re freezing your spirited butts off in Tent City.

Yes, we all have some fond memories with the Blog, and we as a Board this year thought that last year just wasn’t the same without the Blog. So, here we are! Just a few things that you can expect from this as the school year goes on:

1. We’ll have links to all relevant information for any sport that is currently being played at GU: this means that in the fall we’ll have links to everything the soccer, volleyball and even cross country teams are up to, so you can keep track of all of our great Gonzaga athletes. This is the same for basketball in the winter, as well as baseball, golf, crew, tennis and track teams in the spring. Expect these things to be up in the next few days as we get everything pulled together.

2. For basketball season specifically, look for updates on game happenings, ticket distribution dates and times, and any relevant information on tenting or game day procedures. We know questions around these things come up, so we want to use this as a resource and help you access this information quickly and easily.

3. Finally, look for the return of Dirt: there’s nothing like reading up on the next big opponent for basketball games and knowing just how they tick, and being able to come up with creative ways to get under their skin. If you’re confused, look at the previous blog entries on CSU, SMC and WVU – it’s some pretty good stuff.

Well, that’s about all we have for now. Just a quick reminder to everyone that has a Kennel Club Membership: remember to swing by our tent at Club Fair on September 11 to pick up your free pair of socks! If you haven’t signed up yet, you can still get your membership pack here and get your sling bag, 30th anniversary KC shirt, as well as the socks. See you around, Zags!
